Julia Crispell

Thursday, June 13, 2024, Julia (Judy) Cathryn Hicks Crispell of Lakewood Ranch, FL, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family after a brief illness.

Judy was born in Washington, D.C., on June 16, 1941. She was raised with her two older brothers, Robert and Phillip Hicks, in the Hyattsville and Wheaton, MD area. While attending St. Patrick’s Academy, Judy’s faith in the catholic religion and a love of writing and learning was fostered and encouraged. In 1974, she married the love of her life, Stephen F. Crispell, and together they raised their eight children. In 1976, she began working for various federal agencies, finding a home in security with the Defense Intelligence Agency, where she retired in 2001 after 25 years of service. After retirement, Judy and Steve moved to Bradenton, Florida.

Since 2003, Judy was very active in her church, Our Lady of the Angels, in Lakewood Ranch, Florida. She led a robust retirement life by volunteering, joining book clubs, hosting card games and dinner parties, and spending time with her family. Judy was devoted to her family and was a wonderful mother and grandmother who was always there when we needed her most, offering support, wisdom, and love in abundance. She was a beacon of kindness and strength and was deeply loved and will be dearly missed.

Judy was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, her beloved husband of 49 years, her daughter, Julia Marie Horan, her son, Duane F. Crispell, granddaughter Sara M. Crispell, and sister-in-law Lucy Hicks. She is survived by her children, Eileen (John) DeAtley, Sharon Frances (J. Thomas Goucher), Mary Catherine Escalona, Carl Lee (Rossanna) Crispell, Steven Horan, and W. Thomas (Kimberly) Horan. Additionally, Judy is survived by 14 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Mary Hicks, and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

A Memorial Mass will be held at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church, 12905 State Road 70 East, Lakewood Ranch, FL 34202, on July 1, 2024, at 11:00 am. Interment will follow at 1:00 pm at Sarasota National Memorial Cemetery in Sarasota, FL.
