Jack graduated from Serena High School in Serena, Illinois, and later earned a Bachelor of Science in Financial Management from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville by going to night school while working full-time. His educational pursuits paved the way for his distinguished career as a senior bank regulator for the federal government’s Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, where he dedicated himself until his retirement in 1994.

Jack served honorably in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957, a period that instilled in him a sense of duty and discipline that he carried throughout his life. His military service was a source of great pride and was reflected in his continued commitment to his community.
An active member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Venice, Florida, Jack’s faith was a cornerstone of his life. He served on the church’s finance committee and delivered communion to the homebound for many years.

Jack first met his beloved wife, Mary Louise Schoendienst, while both attended the fourth grade at St. Mary Grade School in Carlyle, Illinois. Although Jack’s family moved away from Carlyle before his senior year in high school, Jack and Mary maintained their special bond and were married on September 8, 1955. They became the loving parents of five children: Mike (Libby), Bob (Kathleen), Mark (Terri), Karen (Kay Conrad), and Kathy (Mike) McVay. Jack was a proud grandfather to nine grandchildren: Allison, Jon, Matt, Mitchell, Brianne, Jessica, Becca, Kelli, and John. Jack was also blessed with 16 great-grandchildren.

Jack was an avid golfer, who holds the family record with three hole-in-ones during his lifetime. He was a passionate supporter of the St. Louis Cardinals and was a keen follower of financial markets. Jack was known for his kind heart and gregarious nature which endeared him to a wide circle of friends.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Russell C. and Dorothy T. Powers. He is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren, who all miss him greatly.
