Pearl Ratushewitz
Pearl (Anderman) Ratushewitz’s life was a testament to resilience, love, kindness, and grace. She was born in New York City to Simon and Rose, and died peacefully on May 20, 2026 in Sarasota, Florida, with her family at her side. She lived a life defined by optimism, joy, generosity, strength, wisdom, and unwavering love for her family.
Pearl was predeceased by her husband, Lenny, and by her son Steven, whose life was tragically cut short at the age of 23. Despite enduring profound loss and heartbreak, Pearl remained remarkably upbeat, positive, compassionate, and deeply caring toward everyone around her. She was a source of comfort, practical wisdom, and encouragement to all who knew her.
She is survived by her loving children, Philip Ratushewitz and Elena Kapelonis, her grandchildren Chrysoula, Genia, and Seth, her brother Siggy (Jo) Anderman and sister Carol (Steve) Harkavy, along with many nieces and nephews, cousins, and extended family members and many dear friends whose lives were enriched by her kindness and warmth.
Pearl began her career as an elementary school teacher. Long before it was common for women to become entrepreneurs, Pearl built and operated a successful 100-child nursery school, dedicating more than 40 years to nurturing and educating thousands of young children and mentoring hundreds of educators. Her work was not simply a profession but a calling, and generations of families benefited from her patience, intelligence, and caring spirit.
Pearl also had a wonderful sense of fun and adventure. She was a terrific poker player who, with her “sweet old lady” demeanor, would surprise players half her age, more often than not relieving them of their chip stacks. Occasionally she joined her brother and friends in Las Vegas for the World Series of Poker, where her unlikely presence, sharp mind and spirited personality shined through – and won big pots.
Above all, Pearl will be remembered as an extraordinary role model — practical, wise, loving, generous, and endlessly concerned for the welfare of others. Her advice about life’s challenges and opportunities was treasured by those fortunate enough to receive it. She leaves behind a legacy of strength, dignity, compassion, and love that will continue to inspire her family and all who knew her.
She will be deeply missed and forever remembered. May she rest in peace.
