Richard E. Leaman

Bradenton, Florida – Richard “Putsy” or “Dick” Leaman passed away peacefully on February 22nd, 2024 at his home at Freedom Village in Bradenton, Florida. Dick is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Marian Fehrenbacher. Loving father of Gary (Heather), Jane, Mark (Francesca), Karen, David (Christine), and Sara (Roger). Dear “Papa” of seven grandchildren: Philip, Alexandra (Cameron), Hope, Henry, Joseph (Brianna), Isabella and William, and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by father, Donald, and mother, Hilda; brothers, Donald and Jerry; and sister, Sally Johnson.

Dick graduated from Bradley University in the summer of 1953 and then attended Navy Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI, where upon graduation, he was commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy.

Dick was a career naval officer spending nearly 23 years in the U.S. Navy as a naval aviator. He began flight school in Feb 1954 at NAS Pensacola, FL, finishing after completing advanced multi-engine training at NAS Hutchinson, KS in April 1955, earning his “wings of gold” as a Naval Aviator. It was during Christmas leave that he married his high school sweetheart, Marian Louise Fehrenbacher in Joliet, IL. He remained married to Marian until his death, nearly making their 70th anniversary.

Dick had many flying and non-flying assignments until his retirement in June 1976.

Dick and Marian retired to their hometown of Joliet, Illinois, where Dick held management jobs for several companies. Dick and Marian began “snowbirding” to Bradenton, FL, before permanently living there in 2021. Dick was an avid golfer and could be found on the golf course several days a week. He also retained his love of flying, keeping his pilot’s license current in several aircrafts and flying into his 70’s. Dick enjoyed flying with his children and grandchildren, passing on this love to his sons, Gary, Mark, and grandson, William. He was also active in several civic organizations, including Kiwanis, Moose, Elks, VFW, Salvation Army, and American Legion.

Mass of Christian Burial Friday, March 15, 2024, at 9:30 AM at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Bradenton, Florida. Followed by a Celebration of Life reception at 11:30 AM at Freedom Village Tuscany Room, Bradenton, FL. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Dick, Tidewell Foundation, 3550 S. Tamiami Tr, Sarasota, FL 34239, or Cathedral of St. Raymond Nonnatus, 604 N Raynor Ave, Joliet, IL 60435.
